Best Of: Bunkhouse Stampede 1988

Blake Knox Blake's Best Of

Next up in the Blake’s Best Of series is Bunkhouse Stampede 1988.

And let’s just say that finding anything that qualifies was not an easy task with this particular show.

Let’s jump into the best of Bunkhouse Stampede 1988.

Road Warrior Hawk challenges Ric Flair for the NWA Title

I’ve always found it fun when a tag team regular challenges for a prestigious singles title. And Flair against Hawk was an intriguing matchup.

The crowd ate this much up with a spoon, and there were several spots that had you believing that Hawk was gonna win the title. That’s what made Flair so great – he could consistently fool you into thinking his opponent could beat him.

This wasn’t a classic or anything, but it was far and away the best thing on this show.

Colossal failure leads to much-needed changes

It’s not an understatement to say that Flair vs. Hawk was the only good thing on Bunkhouse Stampede 1988. Bobby Eaton and Nikolai Volkoff fighting to a 20-minute draw sounds better than it actually was. Larry Zybszko and Barry Windham pretty much used nothing but rest holds in their own 20-minute bout.

As for the Bunkhouse Stampede Finals? Don’t get me started since this is supposed to be a positive series. Not to mention that the wrong start time was printed on the tickets for the show, which resulted in fans arriving late. Then again, that was probably a ‘best of’ for those fans since they didn’t have to watch the Eaton/Volkoff match.

So, because the show was atrocious, it forced the NWA to make changes to its booking. That’s worthy of ‘best of’ consideration.
