Best Of: Summerslam 1988

Blake Knox Blake's Best Of

In the newest installment of Blake’s Best Of, we focus on Summerslam 1988 from Madison Square Garden in New York.

While there was nothing great on this show, there were several noteworthy matches and moments that played a big role in the WWF’s future.

Let’s dive into the best of Summerslam 1988.

Entertaining opener between the Fabulous Rougeaus and The British Bulldogs

The finish to this match was a time limit draw at 11:19, which was rather interesting. But aside from that, this was a fun back and forth match between two of the many great tag teams in the WWF during this era. Also, you simply couldn’t beat the Rougeaus intro music. It was just the best.

New Intercontinental champion

Who was gonna accept The Honky Tonk Man’s open challenge for the Intercontinental title? That was the big question. Of course, it was The Ultimate Warrior that stepped in and squashed Honky in 30 seconds to win the title. The crowd went nuts, and it was obvious that Warrior was going to become a huge star.

The Hart Foundation vs. Demolition

Again, the WWF tag team scene was loaded. These were two of my favorites, so it makes sense why this is included in my personal Best Of collection for Summerslam 1988. Both teams just had so much personality, even if they were completely different. This was an eight-minute match that packed a lot of punch.

Star-studded main event

Most people probably remember the main event for Elizabeth removing her skirt. Another memorable moment was Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage doing their super awesome handshake before dominating the rest of the match. Ted DiBiase and Andre the Giant were great in their roles here, and the Mega Powers vs. the Mega Bucks was just a cool way to hype it.
