Best Of: Great American Bash 1988

Blake Knox Blake's Best Of

In the newest installment of Blake’s Best Of, we look at Great American Bash 1988.

The main event between Ric Flair and Lex Luger should’ve been a classic, but instead, became a complete joke after one of the dumbest finishes in the history of pro wrestling.

So, there wasn’t exactly a ton to choose from when finding Best Of material for this show.

Let’s jump into the best of Great American Bash 1988.

Another great NWA Tag Team title match

The NWA tag team scene was just ridiculous in 1988, and even thrown together teams like Sting and Nikolai Volkoff could deliver awesome matches against the right opponents. So, when they teamed up here to take on the always excellent Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard, it made for a fun showdown for the NWA Tag Team titles. This was my highest-rated match of the show, and it would’ve been rated even higher if the NWA wasn’t so intent on lackluster finishes.

The Fantastics vs. The Midnight Express is a consistent winner

You could put these two in a blindfold match, and they would find a way to make it work. The same can’t be said for Jake Roberts and Rick Martel. I’m kidding, I actually didn’t hate that blindfold match as much as others did. Anyways, this wasn’t the best match the Fantastics and Midnight Express had, but it did reach the *** level. For Great American Bash 1988, that may as well have been a ***** five classic since this show wasn’t very good. And it also featured Jim Cornett locked in a cage above the ring while wearing a straight jacket. What more could you want?
